The start of 2026 has already been a busy and exciting period for the Academy Racing Team. Even before the team had returned to Canberra, work was already underway across all sub-systems as members progressed into the design phase for 2026. Early collaboration and planning have set a strong foundation for the year ahead as the team begins developing this year’s car.
Our first event of the year was the Academy Sign-on Night, which provided an opportunity to showcase the team and recruit from both the incoming first-year cohort and the wider trainee body. MD25 was proudly displayed during the event, giving potential members the chance to see the team’s work up close and learn more.
Our first meeting of the year saw a session that was filled with engaging discussions as new members were welcomed into the workshop for the first time. It provided an opportunity for them to explore the space, view early design concepts for MD26, and begin identifying the areas of the car and the project that most interested them. For many of the new members, this was their first look at the scale and complexity of the work involved in with the team.
The first workshop session of the year gave new members the opportunity to get involved with some hands-on experience from their very first week. First-year members began by working with the outboard systems from MD25, gaining practical familiarity with key components of the car. They were also introduced to some of the team’s low-voltage systems and workshop processes, helping to build foundational technical skills while integrating them into the team environment.
The final big event for the team so far this year was the final drive of MD25. Giving the entire team the chance to see the car on track and witness the culmination of last year’s efforts. Giving new and old members a chance to drive the team’s first electric car for the last time, it was a great day of laughter and laps. For many of the new members, it was an inspiring first experience seeing the car perform in a real driving environment, while for returning members it served as both a celebration of MD25 and motivation for the development of MD26.
As the season continues, the team remains focused on advancing the design and manufacturing of the new car while continuing to build the skills and experience of its members.
We would like to extend our sincere thanks to everyone who supports the Academy Racing Team, including our returning sponsors and the organisations joining us this year. Your support makes it possible for us to keep doing the work we do.
We can’t wait for the year ahead, the achievements, excitement and challenges it will bring.
